Reader Letter – Cosmic Family

cosimic1.jpg“I didn’t find anything in your site about “Cosmic Family” for Wii. I rented it for my 3-year old (4 on Feb 16th) and after getting over some trouble with the Wii IR difficulties, she really loves it. I was curious what you thought of it.” – Reader

I could shout it from the mountain. “I Love Cosmic Family!”

But it’s true we haven’t officially covered it. Why? Too many games get released + I tend to favor the M-rated ones because we’re more about warning parents about content than we are about recommending great games (like Cosmic Family) to parents.

On the strength of a recommendation on the GamerDad message board I picked up the game for my son Henry for Christmas. He loves it. It’s basically a bit of weirdness, I’m guessing it’s French Canadian, and has a real quirky sensibility. I haven’t payed attention to a plot but I love the bright and colorful animated characters. The cat appears to be insane. There’s a really cool bit where the bath water comes to life and the kids swim in it as it moves around a space bathroom –

Look. If that last sentence didn’t impress you … nothing will.

Henry can do it all himself and he loves the game. I’ll do a review once I burn through all of this outside work. I heartily recommend it for 5 and under. 3 is about as young as I’d consider as the Wii remote work in the game requires a fair amount of dexterity and skill.

Also, the game has a solid and consistent tone. It hasn’t gone through the American Blandification machine and that … European (or my guess, French Canadian) sensibility leads to hilarious and potentially offensive moments like Big Sister’s breasts going “boing” and jiggling slightly when she appears. I suppose some parents might appreciate a warning about that but really, it’s not as exciting or anything like what any teenagers reading think it sounds like. It’s just funny, surprising, and mildly shocking in a educational preschooler game.
