This Week in Games: November 16 – 22

Perhaps the interesting note this week is not that just abou every platform has a large release list with some standout games, but that the PSP has only one game … and it is a multiplatform game coming out on every platform. My personal ‘game overload’ comes from two PC expansions to major RPG’s – Gothic 3: Forsaken Gods(PC) and Neverwinter Nights 2: Storm of Zehir(PC). Other highlights include Shaun White Snowboarding (Xbox 360/PS3/Wii/PS2/PSP/DS/PC), Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe (Xbox 360/PS3), Tomb Raider Underworld(Xbox 360/PS3/Wii/DS/PC), and Animal Crossing: City Folk (Wii). Check out the rest of the list!

As for last week’s games, Call of Duty: World at War has turned out to be an solid game on all platforms, certainly better than many of us expected, while Mirror’s Edge (Xbox 360/PS3) is not quite as highly rated but given high marks for innovation. Star Wars: The Clone Wars for the Wii and DS have met with uneven response, with neither being great but the DS version being better than the Wii.

Enjoy gaming!

  1. MUST GET ANIMAL CROSSING! 🙂 –Cary

  2. Looks like the Gothic 3 expansion is pushed out by 2 weeks … just as well, as I just reinstalled Gothic 3 and NWN2 (and the first NWN2 expansion) … too much gaming to do!

  3. Geez, I’ve been so caught up in Fallout 3 and Call of Duty: World at War that I totally missed that there were expansions for NWN2 and Gothic 3 coming out so soon. Guess I know what to put on the holiday wish list, if I can wait that long…..

  4. The Storm of Zehir is the one to really look at – it does the most to rebuild the whole system into a much more ‘BG2’ feeling with a full party system and overworld map. Add to that the excellent writing we saw in ‘Mask of the Betrayer’ and you have a game that I am terribly excited about playing.

How well do the filters work in CoD WaW?

  6. @ Rich Neves

How is CoD WaW? i’m considering getting it, but I don’t know if it’s worth it.

    Ditto what Wampa King said.

  7. “How well do the filters work in CoD WaW?”

They call the settings ‘unrestricted’ and ‘reduced’. Just looking again at the opening with the filter on I would definitely call it VERY reduced! It does a very good job at taming the language and gore to the point of fitting into a T range – but the game itself remains brutal and intense … nothing you can do about that!

Also, while there is some claim of reduced impact online, I have no idea how that works … haven’t tried yet, but my assumption with this sort of game is that you will get the same sort of teen audience interested in hearing themselves swear incessantly over the internet that I’ve encountered in every other FPS I’ve played online.

As for the game … it is ‘very good’ but not great. Definitely below CoD4, but honestly better than I expected. The DS version is also pretty good, but again I think that CoD4 DS was better.

  8. Filters? What filters? 🙂

It states that the filters are not for online play, but good for “all other game types” which I assume is solo and co-op. I haven’t tried them to be honest. Didn’t even know they were there until I just looked.

As for the gameplay, it is basically CoD4 with a different skin, WWII settings, tanks, and dogs instead of choppers. It still has the perks, classes, etc that you have in CoD4. It is definitely bloodier, without the filters, than CoD4. When you get hit by a grenade you see your corpse there, with parts missing, like your legs. I would almost go so far as to say that the blood/gore, violence, and language are on the same level as Fallout 3. The biggest difference is that you don’t have the slo-mo VATS scenes in WaW. The game has earned the M rating it has, no doubt about that.

I agree with Mike in that the game is better than I expected, but not as good as CoD4 in many ways. I’m not to thrilled with the throwback to WWII, but I play with a group of friends online and we compete in ladders and leagues and they were all tired of CoD4 and wanted to move on, so I got it more to be social than because I wanted to move away from CoD4. Now if only I could convince them that their fascination with “Rifles Only” is simply not normal……

  9. Whenever you guys get around to play Animal Crossing leave out no detail in the controls and gameplay.

  10. “Whenever you guys get around to play Animal Crossing leave out no detail in the controls and gameplay.”

Since I know Cary is playing that you can be sure the review will be thorough and reading it will be an adventure in itself!

  11. What makes the Shaun White title an ESRB 10+? I am trying to choose btw this and We Ski. From what I’ve read, the balance board support in We Ski is basically simple left & right, whereas Shaun White has much better support (left right, speed, tricks, etc…) Based on this, I would like to go with Shaun White, but I am somewhat concerned about the 10+ rating. Anyone care to shed some light?
