Doldrums – What are you Playing?
I’ve finished Batman and slated it for another playthrough (a rear thing for me) on Hard, sometime in the future. Beatles Rock Band is due in these parts today or tomorrow, but other than that I’m kind of at a loss game-wise. Wolfenstein lost my interest due to generic gameplay and poor pacing sometime back and I decided that Battlefield 1943 (an awesome download) just wasn’t fun using a console controller. What I really mean to say here is that back in the PC BF1942 I was a deadshot on Wake Island – on the 360 I wonder how the heck people can hit me so consistently. Of course, the coming PC version might just prove I’ve totally lost my touch. A real possibility at 38. So, what to play?
Madden 10 is very, very good but the friend I used to play it with is gone now. Horrible to see a 4 year tradition die like that, for me the beginning of Fall always meant beating the crap out of whatever team he chose to play. Playing alone – or over the net – isn’t nearly as fun and Henry isn’t old enough yet for a game that complicated.
The new Professor Layton is very good I hear but those kinds of puzzle games tend to frustrate me to no end. It’s sitting on the table, bound to be picked up eventually but with the nonstop “wow” factor of Batman still echoing in my head – it seems too staid.
Nothing on the iPhone app front except Spider – which I highly recommend but finished fairly quickly. That game would work well on the DS and I hope it ends up there for the non-iPhone/Touch gamers. It’s a simple game where you’ve got to build webs – any size – to catch bugs. All in a gorgeously rendered haunted-style house.
Linda and I just finished watching all of The Wire (and omigod!) and we’re finding other shows disappointing by comparison. I missed the show so much I bought and am reading the massive Homicide: Life on the Killing Streets (from the creator and also the inspiration for the NBC series similarly named) and finding it fascinating. It does make me hug my wife and kids a little harder each night though, Homocide Detectives are amazing people.
Finished a couple big articles for the week – making this a “lucrative” week – and I have promising feelers out for some more work. Summer is a bad time to be a game writer and Autumn is just insane. No balance at all.
Huh. Beatles Rock Band just arrived. Good timing. Better get a few licks in before the kids get home from school.
So whatchoo doin?

This past week I’ve been really enjoying Metroid Prime Trilogy and Dissidia: Final Fantasy.

But this weekend I’ll be playing lots and lots of games in Seattle. 🙂 –Cary

I finally picked up Bioshock, CoD4, The Orange Box, and Fable 2 this summer, so that’s mainly what I’ve been playing. I also grabbed ‘Splosion Man, Shadow Complex, and a couple other things on Deals of the Week from XBLA.
With school just having started, I’ll have to be cutting back on my gaming time, though.

Dissidia is much more addictive than I’d thought it would be — I find myself staying up late playing in bed, which pretty much never happens. And I don’t even play fighting games anymore! Really got under my skin.

Can’t help but recommend Mass Effect. Great RPG (as is expected from BioWare) with endless replay value. Can’t wait for Mass Effect 2! But, don’t worry. With the release of games like Modern Warfare 2, Borderlands, and of course, Halo 3: ODST. There will soon be a flood of software and you won’t be able to beat games as fast as they put them out.
