Cary’s Return to E3: Day 3

On the last day of E3, I just had a few last minute meetings and things to do, so this blog will have more miscellaneous pictures and stuff. Plus we’ll take a look at the Video Game History Museum. And we’ll have a “Silly E3 Booth Lady Contest,” and I’ll name my “E3 Best of Show.” Wanna find out the winners? Well you’ll just have to click to read more!

Atlus

While waiting for a meeting, I checked out Atlus’ booth. As you can tell, they were promoting an upcoming game called Catherine. I really can’t tell what kind of game it is, though. I hear it’s a really weird puzzler. Not sure I’ll get it, though. The Atlus booth was so crowded and cramped that I didn’t stay very long in it.

When I got my media badge, they even put a Catherine ad on it. Now it says, “Will you choose Catherine…or Cary Woodham.” Aw man, given the choices, I don’t think anyone would choose little old me. Ha ha! Oh well!

505 Games

Like Majesco, 505 Games showed a variety of titles for all ages that I was pleasantly surprised with. First was a one on one fighter featuring the Supremacy MMA license and fighters, even a couple of female brawlers. I don’t really know much about these mixed martial arts TV shows like MMA and UFC, but the MMA game was really easy to figure out and get into. I even beat one of the developers, but he probably let me win. It’s a little more violent, as fighters can get bruised and blood can stick the mat, so it’s probably best for older fans.

Backbreaker Vengeance is a football theme puzzle action game that will be available to download on consoles like the 360 soon. I think it’s based on a popular cell phone game. It’s your job to run down the field and dodge as many tacklers as you can. The color of the uniforms will clue you in on how you need to dodge. Another mode lets you be the tacklers, and there are tons of multiplayer options as well. Only problem I had was it was hard for me to time when to push the buttons to dodge. I think football fans who want a simpler play experience will enjoy this, though.

Another downloadable title that will be out next year is Top Gun: Hard Lock. This action filled airplane dogfight challenge reminded me of Sky Crawlers on the Wii, as you use button prompts on screen to quickly and easily get behind your opponents to lock on to them! I bet that since it’s such a simple game, it’ll be very popular online.

There were also a few Kinect games, like a cartoony Grease music game where you dance to songs from the popular musical, as well as other well-known tunes that would fit in that era. And Michael Phelps: Push the Limit is probably the only fitness game I know that features swimming as the main component.

Video Game History Museum

Last time I went to E3 was in 2006, when they used Kentia Hall. And that’s where the Video Game History Museum was set up. So I’m glad they were back again in a corner of South Hall this year. They had arcade games and old consoles you could play, as well as other neat exhibits. Here are pics of a few of them:

I used to have that Q*bert plush. He had a squeaky nose.

The Atari 5200 was actually my first home console (unless you count our Apple ][+). I can’t believe how big the 5200 was!

Misc. Bits

Gamespot’s booth made me happy for one reason only. They gave out free Klondike ice cream bars! It’s one of their sponsors, I guess. Just like how playing the new BurgerTime game made me hungry for hamburgers, I was also craving ice cream at E3 for some reason. So this hit the spot for me! So if you see a Klondike chocolate fudge ice cream bar, get it, they’re good!

Another booth had a bounce house! I used to love those when I was a kid. I would’ve gotten in this one, but I had too many meetings to go to. Sometimes being an adult isn’t all it’s cracked up to be!

Some stormtroopers and Jedi invaded E3.

I don’t know what these little dudes were supposed to be, but they looked cool so I took a picture of them anyway.

And that’s RUSTY Hearts, with an R. Not a B.

Cary’s Silly E3 Booth Babe Contest

And on that note, this part of my blog should probably be rated T for Teen. Every year I’ve been to E3, companies hire models to attract attention and be friendly and helpful as they greet attendees to whatever booth they’re at. I think I’ll call them “Booth Ladies” from now on since that sounds more polite. Of course, taking pictures of them in the first place probably wasn’t very polite, but they’re still a part of E3 and it’s all in fun anyway. So here are a few pics of some of the sillier costumed booth ladies.

Here’s a lady in army clothes

Normally when passing by a booth lady, I’ll smile and say hello. But I didn’t say anything to this booth lady because she was too scary!

It’s actually really hard work being a booth lady, having to be on your feet all day wearing tight clothes and being friendly even if you don’t feel good that day. So at Nexon’s booth, they had a bed for the scary lady to take a nap on.

I swear I was only trying to take a picture of the tank, but then she had to ‘butt’ in. Har har!

A sword lady flanked by two…spies I guess.

Some more silly costumes

As I said earlier, it’s probably really hard work being a booth lady. But this one had it even harder, as she was demoing a fitness game with the UFC license ALL DAY! And it wasn’t just the booth ladies. PR professionals and game developers were showing off Kinect fitness games all day, too! EVERYONE at E3 works very hard!

This lady couldn’t decide if she wanted to be a referee or a belt-winning championship wrestler.

Nearly every year I’ve been to E3, Nyko has their booth ladies don bright red hair. This year they gave out red wigs, too, and I got one!

And this lady was really good at standing on one foot.

And the winner of Cary’s Silly E3 Booth Lady Contest is…

Cooking Mama! Look how happy she is that she won! What a woman!

And yes, this whole thing was meant to be silly. After writing three days’ worth of E3 articles, I was in a goofy mood.

Cary’s E3 Best of Show

So I guess you all want to know what my favorite game of E3 was. But I don’t really have one. Maybe the Kirby Wii game, I guess. But you know who the REAL winners of E3 are? All the people who make E3 possible. Booth ladies, PR professionals, game developers, members of the media like myself, my dad who I take to E3 with me because I’m blind in one eye and sometimes need help getting around, Andrew Bub, THE one and only GamerDad who provides me with an outlet to write these things, and readers like you! That’s the best part of E3.

And that’s all I care to write about E3. In the comments section, let me know how you liked my E3 articles, and what your favorite things about E3 were!

If you missed them, here’s Day 1 and Day 2 of my E3 adventures! –Cary

  1. 🙂 I still have an Atari 5200, it’s tough to keep the lousy controllers working though.
Nice job on the articles. The Catherine or Katherine game actually looks interesting, we’ll have to see when it comes out.

  2. Thanks! How DO you keep 5200 controllers working? Tell me how that Catherine game is. Looks kinda weird, even for me 🙂

  3. Wow! Photos of the Microvision. That was one of my earliest “portable” gaming toys. It was awesome, but kept breaking, I think I returned it twice to get it fixed… I still have it downstairs. I had pinball, sea duel, and some sort of breakout type thing. I loved that it had a little tiny knob on it for breakout…

  4. Yeah I noticed the little knob on the bottom when I saw it there.

  5. Catherine is now my favorite game.
Thanks again for doing this Cary. I should have asked you to collect business cards for me but I’m happy you kept the name out there while we’re (forever) retooling.

I also had a 5200 and the crying shame was that we got it and then moved to Singapore where my dad didn’t tell me about the voltage differences so I fried the thing on day one. And my dad did not replace it. Sad memory. In Singapore they did have knock off apple IIs and pirate software shops that were then, in Singapore, legal so that helped. But I think I want to buy a 5200 for little old me now.

  6. You’ve played the Catherine game already, Andrew?

One good thing is that every time I introducted myself to PR folk, I would tell tlhem about you, too, Andrew. And they would say, “Oh yeah, I know him!”

I wish that companies would start doing 5200 collections and not just 2600 ones.
