My Mom’s Top Five Favorite Video Game Characters!

A couple of years ago around Mother’s Day, I wrote a blog about my mom’s favorite video games. Her lineup hasn’t changed at all since then, so this year for Mother’s Day (next Sunday, May 13),  I thought I’d list some of her favorite video game characters instead.

Now, there are two things you need to keep in mind before I start this list. Some of the characters on here aren’t from games that my mom likes to play, but she likes the characters anyway. Most of the games my mom plays (such as Bejeweled and Book Worm), don’t even have characters at all. The next thing to take note of is that my mom didn’t actually make this list. I kind of thought of this list myself using what I know about my mom. But since I’ve known her pretty much all my life, I think I have a good grasp on what she likes. So let’s get started:

5. BloodRayne

Each member of my immediate family has a preference regarding the undead (that’s a statement I thought I’d never say). I like ghosts, brother Jeff likes zombies, and my mom likes vampires. Now she doesn’t play any video games that have vampires in them (unless you know of a Bejeweled clone that has vampires in it). But she does read vampire books like the Ann Rice stuff, and yes, she read all the Twilight books. And she loves vampire movies and TV shows, too, such as True Blood, Twilight, and even the BloodRayne movies! She even told me one time that she just saw the movie BloodRayne 3 on TV and it wasn’t as good as the other movies. She asked if I knew why BloodRayne 3 didn’t have the same star actress as the other ones did. I told her that I didn’t even know they MADE a BloodRayne 3, let alone who stars in those movies!

One time she even asked me why I don’t play games like BloodRayne and Tomb Raider. I just reminded her that she knows the kinds of games I like to play. However, last year she was excited when I told her that I reviewed a BloodRayne game, and she was happy to hear that I actually liked it. That game was BloodRayne Betrayal, and the reason why I liked it is because it was a 2-D game with classic sensibilities made by WayForward. I guess the 2-D BloodRayne character was kind of cool, as she was a strong woman who only sucked blood from bad guys. But I still say that vampires are gross, even if my mom likes them.

4. Dr. Mario

This is one of her favorite puzzle games, so I guess this is a case of one of her favorite characters being in a game she also likes to play. Anytime I get a new Nintendo console, she always asks if there is a version of Dr. Mario for it. She was even excited when I told her that Dr. Mario was an unlockable character in Super Smash Bros. Melee! And she laughed at the Dr. Mario reference that I showed her in Kid Icarus: Uprising!

3. Cooking Mama

My mom is a lot like Cooking Mama. She loves to cook, and when she gets mad, fire comes out of her eyes! Just joking! But she does like laughing at Cooking Mama’s silly voice. Later on this year, I’m going to buy my mom a 3DS, and I’ve already got an extra copy of Cooking Mama 4 for her to play. She enjoys other cooking games, so I think she’ll have fun with this one, too.

2. Tommy & Timmy

These are the two little raccoons who help out in Tom Nook’s store in the Animal Crossing games (in case you didn’t know). And my mom LOVES Animal Crossing. She played it more than I did, and she even learned how to turn on the Wii all by herself so she could play it when I wasn’t around to help her! Knowing her, that’s saying a lot! Even though I bought her a pink DSi a couple of years ago, I’ll buy her a 3DS as well once Animal Crossing comes out for it. She plays her DSi more than I play my handhelds, and considering how much she loves the AC games, I know I’ll get my money’s worth out of that venture. We’re both looking forward to the 3DS Animal Crossing game, and I’m excited to play it together with her. And anyone else, too!

1. Princess Peach

My mom doesn’t really play Mario games, but she does get excited when she sees Peach in a video game. I even got her a Princess Peach case for her DS, but later I got her a better made one with Hello Kitty on it so she uses that one instead. The few times that I have managed to get my mom to play a Mario Party or Kart game, she always picks Peach. Maybe I should get her a plush Peach toy? I’ve been trying to get brother Jeff to make her a Peach sprite out of Perler Beads. Maybe he’ll do that for her for Mother’s Day.

Conclusions

And that’s all the characters I can think of. Does your mom like to play video games, or is there a mom in your life who does? Do they have any favorite video game characters? Let me know in the comments section. And don’t forget to tell your mom how much you love her for Mother’s Day, if you are lucky enough for your mom to still be around. And don’t forget to also do something nice for the other moms in your life, such as wives, sisters, friends, etc.  And speaking of other moms, please keep your thoughts and prayers on my grandmother, who just came out of the hospital.

  1. That is funny. I didn’t know they made a Bloodrayne 3 either. My mom doesnt play games, but my dad (at 70) just stopped playing FPS’s due to just general eyesight issues.
