T.E.C. 3001 (iPad)

TEC_BOXPlay as a running robot humanoid is a virtual reality TRON-like setting with T.E.C. 3001, a downloadable game for iOS devices (iPad version reviewed here). It’s a continuously running 3-D obstacle course game where you tackle stages filled with traps, pits, and blockades.

In the single player campaign mode, you will take on stages and run until you get to the end. Along the way, you must collect a certain number of batteries scattered about the course or you won’t be able to pass the stage even if you make it to the goal. Using virtual touch screen buttons, you can steer left and right, jump, charge, and slide. By pressing certain button in combo, you’ll be able to double jump or soar for long distances. Because of this, the controls feel a little bit too complicated for this type of game. In a few of the regular stages and in all the tracks in Endless mode, you simply press left and right to change lanes, like a slot car. I like that method of controls better, actually.

Aside from the two single player modes, there is a multiplayer mode where the screen is split and both players take one side of the iPad and race against each other! You can also unlock various achievements. While I felt the game was a bit too difficult to be very fun, all the gameplay modes and stages do make for a full gaming experience at least. And the TRON-like graphics and sounds are kind of neat.

Kid Factor:

If your robot man runs into a wall or jumps into a pit, it’ll just fall down or fall apart, and that’s about as violent as it gets. Reading skill is needed for the text instructions, and younger gamers may get frustrated at the high difficulty and complex controls.
