One of Nintendo’s hottest games right now is Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U.  And now you can get toys based on the game in McDonald’s Happy Meals.  Click to take a closer look:

The toys are various Mario characters in their racing cars.  Most are the kind you pull back and let go.  Some of the cars’ wheels are sideways to simulate what the cars look like when they go into ‘anti-gravity’ mode for the parts of the tracks that go sideways and upside down.  According to the picture below, there’s Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, and Toad.  And some kind of Mario hat visor.  I’d hate to get that.  Probably wouldn’t even fit my big head!

I got a few of the toys myself (pictured below).  One complaint I have about some of them is the paint jobs could’ve been a little better.  They didn’t even bother to paint Bowser’s spikes on his shell, but granted that would’ve been very hard to do.  Another thing I didn’t like is the toys came with decals to stick on the cars, but they’re very small and don’t stay stuck very well.  But some of the decals sheets have extra stickers with characters like Bowser and Yoshi, so that’s a bonus.

One last thing: I’m glad the Happy Meals still come in the boxes like they did when I was a kid (I can remember when McDonald’s didn’t even HAVE Happy Meals, though).  But look at that face on the box!  That’s nightmare fuel right there!

When you do go to McDonald’s to get the toys, make sure to ask for the ‘boy toys,’ as the ‘girl toys’ are just plush animals.  Although they are admittedly pretty cute, too.  But why would they bother?  Girls like Mario Kart, too, and many of the girls and women I know who like to play games are pretty darn good at it.  Plus one of the racer toys is Peach.  I managed to get all the toys except Peach and Luigi.  I may try again to pick them up later if they have them, but if not I’m not worried.  I got my favorite Mario character, Toad, so I’m happy.  –Cary
