Woody: Endless Summer (iOS, Android)

WOODY_BOXSummer may be over, but you can still enjoy the season with a wakeboarding dog!  Yup, they made a game about a wakeboarding dog.  Now I’ve seen everything.  Help Woody the dog avoid obstacles and collect coins in this free-to-play action game downloadable on iOS and Android (reviewed on iPhone here).

You play as Woody, who is holding on to a wire attached to a jet ski that another dog is driving.  Tap on the screen to jump over obstacles, and tap again while in the air to double jump.  Keep tapping and Woody will spin, and if you spin on the way down from a jump, he’ll dive into the water for a short bit.  Jump and dive to avoid obstacles and collect coins.  The obstacles and coins are randomly generated.  If you run into an obstacle, you’ll slow down a bit.  You have 15 seconds to make it to the next checkpoint, so you’ll want to avoid as many bumps as possible.  If you don’t make it to the checkpoint in time, it’s Game Over.

Use the coins you collect to buy items and upgrades in the shop.  Upgrades will make your power-ups last longer.  Some of the power-ups include a magnet that’ll draw coins toward you.  Unfortunately, the prices for these items and upgrades are pretty steep, but that’s the nature of free-to-play games.  Only other problem is the announcer is a bit annoying, but at least you can turn the sound off.  It’s not a bad game, but it just feels like a bonus stage that should be part of a regular game, and didn’t really hold my interest for long.  What’s weird is that when I entered the download code to review this game, it just went straight to my iPhone, not my iPad.  I looked for this game on the iPad store later, and couldn’t find it.  So I guess I can only play it on iPhone.  I prefer playing games on iPad because the bigger screen is easier for me to see.  I’ve never had that happen to me before.  Oh well.

Kid Factor:

If Woody bumps into something, he just flashes red and slows down.  You hear a bump sound and the announcer may say, “That had to hurt,” but that’s about as violent as it gets.  Just cartoony stuff.  Reading skill is helpful for some of the text in the menus, but not needed just to play.  Parental supervision is recommended for the in-game purchases and ads.
