Metroid Amiibo
A 3DS remake of the Game Boy title Metroid II: Return of Samus was recently released, and it’s called Metroid: Samus Returns. It was also released alongside two new Metroid themed amiibo figures, and naturally I got them (and the game, too). So let’s take a look at the new Metroid amiibo and what they do.
Here they are in the box. They’re sold in a two pack. I like the artwork on the blister pack.
And here they are out of the box. I also included the Samus keychain they gave me at GameStop when I bought these.
The Metroid amiibo is especially cool because it’s a little squishy and rubbery. To show what I mean, here’s a picture of my finger squishing down on the Metroid breaking out of its capsule. Squishy! Squishy!
So what do they do in the game? Well, if you scan the Samus amiibo, you’ll get an extra Aeion tank. If you scan the Metroid amiibo, it’ll mark any nearby Metroids on the map.
The Metroid amiibo from Smash Bros. do stuff in Samus Returns, too! If you scan Zero Suit Samus, you’ll get an energy reserve tank, and if you scan the other Samus, you get a missile reserve tank.
If you scan the four amiibo after you beat the game, you’ll unlock harder difficulty modes, art galleries, and a sound test, depending on which ones you have. Which is cool, but I think those things should be available without the amiibo anyway.
So what do I think of the game? I haven’t been able to play it as much as what I’d like to as of this writing, but from what I have played, it seems pretty good. I didn’t play much of the original Metroid II, so this is mostly new to me. Only thing I don’t like about it so far is I prefer sprite based graphics and pixel art in my Metroid games over the 3-D settings and backgrounds that this game has. But that’s all for now! Woah! That metroid is pretty cool. I’m amazed at how detailed these mass produced figures are.
