The Amazing World of Gumball: Wrecker’s Revenge (iOS, Android)
The Amazing World of Gumball is one of Cartoon Network’s most popular shows right now. It’s about a cat named Gumball who goes to middle school and lives with his blended family of cats and rabbits and his best friend/brother goldfish. I’ve never been a big fan of the show, but I do like the mixed media art style. Now you can play as Gumball in Wrecker’s Revenge, a free-to-play downloadable game on iOS and Android (reviewed on iPad here).
For some reason, Gumball is trapped in a void full of floating islands, and he must jump from one to another to save one of his friends in each level. The game never really explains why he’s doing this, maybe you have to watch the show to understand. To make Gumball jump, you must tap and hold on him and drag to where you want him to go. Release and he’ll jump to the next island if there is one. If not, he’ll be stuck floating in the void and it’ll be Game Over. You can also tap and drag on some islands to move and rotate them. The level ends when you find one of your friends in the stage.
Scattered about the levels are cash bills you can collect. If you can find a shop on one of the islands, you can spend your money on power-ups like a gummi hand that lets you stick to far away islands, a magnet for attracting nearby cash, and hairspray which lets you jump a second time in midair. Unfortunately, the game is not that good. When you lose, you must view an ad if you want to start from a checkpoint, and that gets really annoying after a short while. Your view of the level is limited and the filtered graphics make it hard to see where you can land. Plus the game is just not that much fun overall.
Kid Factor:
If Gumball loses, he just floats away with a sad look on his face. Nothing very violent. If you’re OK with your kids watching the cartoon, they’ll be OK with this game. Parental supervision is recommended for the in-game ads and purchases.
