Cartoon Network Match Land (iOS, Android)

Your favorite Cartoon Network characters have gathered for a food festival, but food-based monsters have retaliated so you must team up to stop them in this match three puzzle battle game.  It plays similarly to other games like Puzzle & Dragons, and is a free-to-play download on iOS and Android devices (reviewed on iPad here).  You’ll see characters and restaurants from your favorite new Cartoon Network shows, including Steven Universe, Adventure Time, We Bare Bears, and more!

The puzzle aspect is similar to other match three puzzlers.  Match certain colors and that team member will attack enemies on the top part of the screen.  You can move pieces straight or diagonally, too.  When you start a move, you’ll have a limited time to keep chaining moves together for more matches, which can lead to better attacks.  As long as you don’t move anything at first, you can take as much time as you need to plan ahead, which is wise because the timer counter ends quick!  Match enough of a color and you can activate that character’s special move, too.  After a certain number of turns, the enemy can attack you.  They can whittle down your hit points and do other things like keep you from seeing pieces or moving them.  You can match heart tiles to heal yourself, but if you run out of energy, you must start that battle over again.

When you win battles, you’ll earn coins and food that you can use to open restaurants.  These establishments can then earn you coins and other upgrades for your characters so you can level up, recruit new toons, and continue the cycle.  The game does a good job of explaining things further.  The only main problem I had with the game is that it’s not near as involving as Puzzle and Dragons was.  You don’t have much of a choice of who’s on your team at first, for instance.  I did like the pixel style graphics, though.  So if you enjoy new Cartoon Network shows and match three battle games, you may want to check this one out.

Kid Factor:

You can attack cartoony food-based monsters with lightning bolts, and defeated ones get encased in bubbles, but that’s about as violent as it gets.  Reading skill is needed for the text, and parental supervision is recommended for the in-game ads and purchases.
