Arcade Islands: Volume One (PS4, Xbox One)
Welcome to an island filled with arcade style mini-games! Arcade Islands: Volume One is a downloadable collection of simple mini-games for one to four players. It’s available on PS4 and Xbox One, but reviewed on PS4 here. If you remember my review of Party Planet on the Switch, you have a good idea what this game is like.
The mini-games are set up in themes organized on different islands. To unlock the next set of mini-games on the islands, you mostly just have to play all the ones in a previous island. Most of these games mimic classic arcade staples like air hockey, memory match, Zuma, Robotron, and more. There are a wide variety of games, ranging from simple shooters to puzzlers. Many of these games were also in Party Planet.
Up to four players can complete together or in teams, but even a single player can enjoy the games and nothing seems amiss. Get a high enough score on a game and you’ll earn stars. Earn all three stars in a game and you’ll get a treasure to display in a treasure room. Really the only problem I had with this game is that for the last island, you must not only play all the games, but get a bunch of stars as well, and that’s hard to do! But otherwise, this game is just simple fun and serves its purpose. Nothing special, but not bad either.
Kid Factor:
Arcade Islands is rated E-10 with an ESRB descriptor of Fantasy Violence. You can zap enemies with lightning, lasers, arrows, and other things, depending on the game, but the violence is very cartoony and enemies just disappear when defeated. Reading skill is helpful for the text, but most games are pretty easy to figure out. Good simple fun for the whole family right here.
