Somos (iOS, Android, PC)

The idea behind Somos couldn’t be any simpler.  You are a dot.  Tap the left side of the screen to move your dot to the right, and tap the right side of the screen to move your dot to the left.  You must do this to avoid obstacles and try to keep your dot from being hit.  Sometimes you must tap on objects to clear them away from your dot’s side as well.  And that’s all there really is to it.  It’s available to download on mobile devices and PC free to start, but reviewed on iPad here.

There are a few gameplay modes in Somos.  There is a campaign mode where you must complete stages.  Each time you tap on an object you get a point and must reach a certain number of points to reach the next stage.  If you get hit you lose tons of points and a life, and if you lose all your lives you must start the stage over again.  There is also a Challenges mode but it looks just like the campaign mode.  There also an endless mode where you can keep playing, and if you buy the full game you get a relaxation mode as well.

The only problem I had with the game is that it was just too hard.  So much stuff can happen on each side of the screen that it was hard to keep track of, and it didn’t help that I would get confused which side of the screen to tap to move the dot.  I couldn’t even get past stage one!  But if you need an easy to learn yet hard to master game in your life, I guess Somos would fit the bill.

Kid Factor:

Nothing violent or objectionable here.  Just dots and shapes, and your dot explodes when hit.  Reading skill is helpful for some of the text and menus, but not necessary just to play.  Younger gamers may get bored and/or frustrated with the simple gameplay and high challenge, though.  Parental supervision is recommended for the in-game purchases.
