An evil being is cloning an army of heroes and baddies from different Sega game universes, and now it’s up to the original heroes to stop them in this match three battle puzzler featuring characters from all sorts of Sega games.  It’s available to download free-to-play on mobile devices, but reviewed on iPad here.

If you’ve ever played a game like Puzzle & Dragons, you’ll know what to expect here.  Form a party of heroes and match gems that represent their colors to make them attack bad guys.  If you match four or more, you’ll get a gem with a star on it.  Match that and your character will do a special attack.  As you match gems, meters will fill on your character icons.  When they’re full, tap the icons and those characters will perform another special move.  Match purple arrows and another bigger meter will fill.  Keep filling it to increase your overall attack strength.  Defeat all the bad guys to pass the level.  If they defeat all your characters, you’ll have to start the level over again.

The biggest draw here is all the Sega characters you can have on your team.  There are heroes and villains from game series such as Sonic the Hedgehog, Golden Axe, Super Monkey Ball, Streets of Rage, Shinobi, Jet Grind Radio, and Phantasy Star.  It’s too bad they didn’t have some of my other favorite characters, too, like Ulala from Space Channel 5, but oh well.  Earn coins to level up your characters and their moves in a special menu.  Normally this part of these kinds of games bores me to tears, but here they make it pretty simple and clear so I really didn’t mind it too much.  Really the only problem I had with this game is that only a couple dozen stages in, and the game gets so hard that you have to replay levels and grind for experience points for days, or spend money to progress.  And it feels like this game is a couple of years too late.  But I’m sure classic Sega fans will want to check it out anyway.

Kid Factor:

You can hit enemies with swords, punches, and magic attacks, but they just fall over and disappear when defeated.  Reading skill is helpful for some of the text, and parental supervision is recommended for the in-game ads and purchases.
