A new Super Smash Bros. game recently came out on Switch, with lots of new characters and all returning ones.  So naturally they’re going to have new amiibo figures, too!  I got the first three: Star Wolf, Inkling Girl, and Ridley, so let’s take a look at them!

And here they are out of the boxes.  I have to say, like most other amiibo figures, they are incredibly detailed.  Star Wolf, while not one of my favorites, still looks great. He even has an insignia on the back of his jacket!  I didn’t realize he wore so much purple, though!  The Inkling Girl is all right.  Looks like yet another version of the Splatoon amiibo, but they had to have her as a Smash amiibo anyway.  But the coolest is Ridley!  Look at him!  He’s such a cool bad guy.  Every time I see him in a Metroid game, my inner child wants to stomp around the house yelling, “Rar!  I’m Ridley!”  When you scan these, they do the same thing they did in the other Smash games.

So what do I think of the game?  Well it’s fantastic of course!  But it probably won’t be my Game of the Year, like other Smash games have been.  They omitted one of my favorite parts, the 3-D trophies, which is what I’m sure inspired the amiibo figures and what made me want to collect them in the first place.  I know that seems kind of a petty thing to complain about, but I really liked those trophies.  The Spirit Mode is cool, but the spirits are just the stickers from the Wii game, and the mode you get them in is just a cleverly disguised Event Mode.  But that doesn’t mean the game is bad at all.  In fact, Smash Ultimate would probably be my number 2 top game of 2018.  It’s great as a handheld game, too, and there are plenty of single player modes to keep fans like me occupied.  I love how easy it is just to hop in and play a game or two and hop right back out again.  Looking forward to seeing what other amiibo and characters they make for it!  –Cary
