Super Mutant Alien Assault (Switch, PS4, Vita, Xbox One, PC)
In the future, Earth has been destroyed by alien invaders. A few handfuls of humans escape on spaceships, but now the alien invaders have caught up to eradicate them. Now it’s up to a battle droid to defend the spaceships from being overrun by aliens. Super Mutant Alien Assault is an arcade style randomly generated single screen platform jumping shooter, similar to another game I reviewed a while back called Duck Game. It’s available for all current game consoles and PC, but reviewed on Switch here.
Your battle droid can run and jump as well as pick up weapons to shoot. You can also gather sub weapons to give you more firepower. Your goal in each of the levels is to destroy all the aliens, but sometimes there are side goals as well. Like you may need to take fuel to a designated spot, or reach valves before they build too much pressure. You can play single player or work together with a friend in local co-op. You can also unlock an endless mode and secret characters. Just be careful as you can take a few hits, but once your battle droid is destroyed, you have to start over again unless you beat a boss after every four stages. There are only 12 levels, but they are super hard.
And that’s really the main problem I have is the difficulty. I do like the 16-bit styled graphics, but could do without the dubstep music. Plus since the game is randomly generated, parts of it just rely on dumb luck. And there’s not any kind of competitive deathmatch multiplayer option, which would fit perfectly with this kind of game. But if you want a really hard arcade style shooting and jumping game, you may enjoy this one.
Kid Factor:
Super Mutant Alien Assault is rated T for Teen with ESRB descriptors of Violence and Blood. You do use all sorts of rifles, pistols, rocket launchers and grenades, which turns aliens into exploding red and green pixels. But the simpler visuals keep the gore from being too graphic. Reading skill is helpful for the text, and younger gamers may find it too difficult.
