Blow & Fly (PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, X/S)
Oh what an unfortunate name this game has! And they couldn’t even get the logo right. It looks like it reads Blow Fly &. Anyway, care to take a guess as to what this game is about? Well don’t think about it too hard. So you’re a blowfish out of water, and you use what water you have left in your mouth to squirt and propel yourself around obstacle filled 2-D areas until you reach a toilet to flush yourself down to the next area. And that’s it. The game is available on nearly all current consoles but reviewed on PS4 here.
Each area is a small 2-D stage with a toilet somewhere for you to reach. When you press left and right on the D-pad, your blowfish will roll in that direction. Pushing a button will make it spit water from its mouth, which will send it flying in the opposite direction. You’ll have to avoid spikes and pitfalls as you make your way to the toilet in each area.
I’m really not a big fan of games that mess with the controls to make it more difficult, and this is one of those games. It’s hard to tell which direction you’ll fly when you spit water. You can use your green tailfin as kind of a guideline, but I wish they would’ve done more to make it easier to see where you are going, like a line that shows what your trajectory would be or something. It’s a one hit and you die kind of game, but you have to start over at the beginning of the stage, which gets annoying. And sometimes there are these hidden rooms with mini-game challenges that I couldn’t figure out, so after a while I just stopped playing in frustration. Not a good game at all.
Kid Factor:
Blow & Fly is rated E for Everyone with an ESRB descriptor of Mild Fantasy Violence. If you get hit by spikes you just explode like a water balloon, but that’s it. Reading skill is helpful for some of the text, but not necessary just to play. Younger gamers may find this one too difficult and frustrating, though.
