Papertris (Switch, PC)
Papertris is a ‘falling blocks down a well’ type puzzle game, and it’s most similar to SEGA’s Columns. Colored blocks of three in a column fall from above, and you must arrange them and press the button to cycle through the color order to match three or more of the same. Except while in Columns you could only match colors horizontally, vertically, and diagonally, here you can match colors as long as they are next to each other. There are single player and multiplayer modes, and it has a neat paper graphics style. It’s available on Switch and PC (reviewed on Switch here).
Play control is super simple. Use the control stick to move the pieces and press the button to cycle through the order of the colors in the block columns. When three or more of the same color touch each other, they’ll disappear. Single player has a mission mode where you must complete stages with certain requirements. Mostly just matching certain colors and blocks, but sometimes you must clear out certain pieces even in the background. I didn’t quite understand how that worked. There are also special pieces that give you random colors when they land, or bombs that can clear out rows and columns. I wasn’t sure which pieces did what either because of the lack of instructions. And that’s really the only problem I had with the game, but otherwise it’s pretty easy to figure out so it wasn’t that bad. There are also local and online multiplayer modes and you can view your high scores on a leaderboard, too. In the options you can cycle through various color blind filters, which is nice. All in all, Papertris is a nice, serviceable little puzzler.
Kid Factor:
Nothing violent or objectionable here. Reading skill is helpful for the menu text, but not necessary how to play. Papertris is rated E for Everyone.
