Feeble Light (PS4, PS5, Switch, PC)
Feeble Light is a randomly generated vertically scrolling bullet hell shooter. It features retro style aesthetics with four color graphics like what you’d see on the Game Boy. Avoid everything and shoot crazy planets and stars with angry faces as you try and get as far as possible and maybe even unlock some new color palettes you can use. It’s available on PlayStation consoles, Switch, and PC, but reviewed on PS4 here.
Play control is simple. Move around with the L stick and fire by holding the X button. Another button lets you send out a limited use screen clearing bomb. Shoot enemies and collect stars and power-ups they leave behind. Some powers give you extra lives or health, add extra bombs, power up your shots, etc. The stages are randomly generated so each playthrough will be different. You can unlock new color palettes but I’m not sure exactly how you do that. I did get a few but not all of them. You can take a few hits before you die, but once that happens, it’s Game Over!
I liked the retro styled graphics and music, but it also made it hard to see what was the background and what you should avoid. Plus when things get hectic, it’s also hard to see where power-ups are. And I’m just not good at these kinds of games anyway so I could barely make it to Stage 3. But if you enjoy these types of games, this one is sure to challenge you.
Kid Factor:
Feeble Light is rated E for Everyone with an ESRB descriptor of Mild Fantasy Violence. You shoot cartoony stars and asteroids that explode, and that’s it. Reading skill is helpful for the menu text but not necessary just to play. Younger gamers may find it too difficult.
