Master Maker 3D Ultimate (PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, X/S, PC)

Make your own 3D platforming levels with Master Maker 3D Ultimate.  It’s available on all current consoles and PC, but reviewed on PS4 here.

There are three modes of play.  The first is Adventure.  Here you can play 50 pre-made levels to see what you can do.  You’ll control a little builder man and can run and double jump.  If you collect a golden hammer, you can throw it like a boomerang to defeat enemies.  But you’ll lose it if you get hit or lose a life.  You can also stomp baddies by jumping on them.  You get five hearts, and if you lose them all or fall into the abyss, you’ll have to start the level over or at a checkpoint.  You can also collect coins but they don’t really do anything.  The levels are as basic platforming as you can get, and play control is slightly sluggish at times, but it works for what it is.

The next mode lets you create your own levels.  I had a little trouble with this mode as it felt a little buggy and unresponsive.  And I wasn’t sure if you could upload your levels for others to play.  The last mode is a Bonus mode that you unlock after beating all the levels in Adventure.  Here you can play more levels that I think are from other creators, but again, I wasn’t sure how they get there.  I think this game would’ve been better if the creation mode had a tutorial or something.  But otherwise this game isn’t too bad, just a bit basic.

Kid Factor:

Master Maker 3D Ultimate is rated E for Everyone with an ESRB descriptor of Mild Fantasy Violence.  If you get hit by an enemy, you just get knocked back a bit and say “Oh!”  If you lose all your hearts or fall off the stage, you just say, “Oh no!” and start the stage over.  I think kids who enjoy playing games like Minecraft, Roblox, or even Mario Maker may enjoy this one.  Reading skill is helpful for the text, but not necessary just to play the levels.
