Sonic Sighted at IHOP!

Back in April, Sonic the Hedgehog teamed up with IHOP for a promotion.  There were menu items and other online goodies.  Unfortunately, the promotion only lasted for about a month.  Just as fast as Sonic, this just came and went!  Sorry I didn’t get this news out sooner, but I’m only one person and I can only do so much.  Plus having such a short promotion was hard to keep up with.  But I figured I might as well go over what they had.

First were the menu items.  They just put some of the regular menu food and slapped Sonic on them, really.  It was a bit disappointing, since IHOP tie-in promotions in the past that I saw had special original menu items.  For instance, when the computer animated Grinch movie came out, I remember they had a ‘roast beast omelet.’  The Addams Family movie had pancakes decorated to look like spiderwebs, and the Wonka movie even had purple pancakes if I remember correctly.  And just after this Sonic promotion, IHOP immediately started special menu items based on the new computer animated movie IF.  But here’s what was on the Sonic menu.  I’ll go over each one.

Sonic’s Blue Blur Special

Just blueberry pancakes.  Makes sense since Sonic is blue.  The menu said it had extra blueberries, but I bet it was the same amount as the regular blueberry pancakes on the menu.  I didn’t order these.  Just not a big fan of eating nothing but pancakes for a meal.  Plus the stuff you put on pancakes like syrup is just too sweet for me.  And eating out all the time gets expensive.

Tails’ 2x2x2

I guess they couldn’t think of anything better for Tails.  He has two tails so he just gets the breakfast with two of everything.  Tails is my favorite Sonic character, though, so I did order this one.  It’s all right.  Just your basic breakfast.

Knuckles’ Chicken Sandwich

I guess they couldn’t think of anything better other than the pun ‘knuckle sandwich.’  It’s a pretty big chicken sandwich, though, with avocados and such.  I ordered this one another time I went to IHOP during this promotion.  The menu said to order them with a side of golden onion rings to make them “Sonic Style.”  I didn’t do that.

Dr. Eggman’s Benedict

They probably could’ve associated Eggman with any egg dish, but maybe the ‘Benedict Arnold’ name made them think of this one.  I ordered this one as well, as I do like eggs benedict.  It was all right, but I’ve had better at other restaurants.

Amy’s Sweet Strawberry Delight

This was more of a dessert.  Waffles with strawberries and ice cream I think.  As I said earlier, I don’t have much of a sweet tooth so I didn’t get this one.

Shadow’s Chaos Chocolate Pancakes

And finally, Shadow got the chocolate chip pancakes.  I wouldn’t mind having a couple of bites of this, but not a whole plate of them!  I don’t know what’s so chaotic about chocolate pancakes, but maybe if you fed these to kids, the sugar rush they’d get would be pretty chaotic.  They’d probably move as fast as Sonic, too!

And those are all the menu items.  Again, it was disappointing that they didn’t make any special one of kind dishes during this promotion, but if it made things more fun for kids visiting IHOP, I guess I’m OK with that.

IHOP also had a special part of their web site where you could get some things as well.  They had a couple of Sonic themed gift cards you could order.  I actually did get these (and got to keep the cards after using them) so here’s a picture of them:

And finally, in the new four player 2D game Sonic Superstars, you could download a special IHOP outfit for Amy that had her wearing a dress and apron.

And that’s it.  In the comments section, tell me what video game characters you’d like to see in a restaurant promotion.  I’d want to see Pac-Man, Kirby, or Mega Man get special menu items!  Later!  –Cary
