Tokyo Cooking (Switch)
Cook Japanese food for customers in Tokyo Cooking. It’s a first person cooking game for Nintendo Switch. Start by talking to the customer at the register and take their order. You can then view a recipe card on the bottom of the screen to see the steps to cook it. There is a workstation you can place ingredients and utensils, and once they’re all there, you can play a few cooking based mini games to prepare it. Once you’re done, give it to the customer and you’ll get paid based on how well you did.
This one feels like a repurposed VR title. You have a limited space to walk around in, just the kitchen counter and pantry. And you can pick up a lot of stuff and place it anywhere. And there’s the first person view, too. My big problem with this game is they don’t tell you how to play very well. The tutorial level has text letting you know how to do things, but sometimes it doesn’t show up until after you do it. And what it does tell you, along with the picture cues that don’t always show up, are very vague. It was so bad that I couldn’t get past the tutorial level before giving up, and I’ve been playing games for over 40 years and can pretty much figure them out by now. Maybe it helps to be familiar with Japanese cooking? I dunno. I’ve certainly never had a rice ball (onigiri) before, let alone cook it. I’d say skip out on this one unless you are very patient.
Kid Factor:
Nothing violent or objectionable here. Reading skill is a must and younger gamers may find it too difficult. Tokyo Cooking is rated E for Everyone.
