Super XYX (PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, X/S, PC)
Super XYX is a vertically scrolling shooter that tries to replicate the look and feel of something you’d see in arcades in the late 90s/early 2000s. It’s available on all current consoles and PC, but reviewed on PS4 here.
When you start, you can choose from two different pilots with ships, each with their own firepower pattern. Move with the control stick and hold down the fire button to shoot. You have a limited number of screen clearing bombs, too. Collect power-ups to increase your firepower and coins for points. You lose a life if you get hit, and when you lose them all it’s Game Over. You can toggle various options in the menu like the difficulty and how many lives and continues you can get. Even so, the game is just way too hard. Half the time I didn’t know I got hit because the bullets are hard to see and the distracting explosions don’t help. I can only recommend this if you are a pro at these kinds of shooters.
Kid Factor:
Super XYX is rated T for Teen with ESRB descriptors of Fantasy Violence and Suggestive Themes. I didn’t notice any suggestive themes, and you just shoot spaceships that explode when defeated. Younger gamers may find this one too difficult, though.
