Popotinho’s Adventures (PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, X/S)
I don’t know if Popotinho is supposed to be an egg or a marshmallow or what, but one day while on an outing with his parents, Popotinho was misbehaving more than usual so his parents decided to punish him by leaving him alone and letting him find his way home. Well dang, that was kind of hardcore for such a simple game. But yeah, that’s what the in-game story says! Anyway, guide your little egg dude through 50 stages of basic 2D platforming in Popotinho’s Adventures. It’s available on all current consoles but reviewed on PS4 here.
Guide your little egg left and right, and jump with the button. Press the button a second time in the air to do a double jump. When you do that, he’ll spin around and can defeat enemies that way by stomping on them. You can take three hits, and when you lose all your hearts or fall into a pit, you must start the level over or at the last checkpoint flag you reached. You can also get an extra life by collecting 100 fruits scattered about the levels. Although since the levels are pretty short and easy, that doesn’t really matter.
For the most part, play control is decent but sometimes I wouldn’t jump when I wanted, or I’d fall through a platform, or my attacks wouldn’t connect. But I still managed to get through all 50 stages because it’s so short and easy. I did kind of like the retro graphics and sounds, though. The game is just a bit too amateurish and I can think of tons of better 2D platformers I’d rather play. But if you want a simple and basic one, this will do the job for a bit.
Kid Factor:
Popotinho’s Adventures is rated E for Everyone with an ESRB descriptor of Mild Fantasy Violence. Enemies disappear in a white puff of smoke when you defeat them, and when you lose all your hearts, you just explode into green pixels. Reading skill is helpful for some of the text, but not necessary just to play. Younger gamers may need help with the tougher jumps, though.
