PAX Prime 2015: Day 3: 15 Minutes Could Save You on Cosplay Insurance

GEICOThe last day of the show was not as eventful for me because I only had one meeting and I was flying out that night to go back home. So for this final article we’re just going to wrap things up and take a look at a few of the cosplay pictures I took.

Dragon Fin Soup

My only meeting on Sunday was with a company making a game called Dragon Fin Soup. I’ve actually played it at the past two PAX Primes, but this time it’s finished and ready to be released this Fall! It’ll be out for PlayStation consoles and PCs. It’s a ‘rogue-like’ (think Mystery Dungeon games) with fairy tale themes and adult humor. In the Story Mode, this time I entered Snow White’s bar and immediately was thrown into a bar fight (again, the battles are just like rogue-likes, even in the bar). There is also a Survival Mode where you try and make it to the end of a super tough, super long dungeon, and an Endless Mode where you just keep going as far as you can until you die. But this time you can choose several characters to play as, such as a Red Riding Hood character who is also the star of the game. But I chose to play as a sheep! Similar to other rogue-likes, this game is pretty hard and I died very quickly. But then, I was a sheep so that may have something to do with it. Either that or I’m just not very good at these kinds of games. I may be reviewing this game later when it comes out on PS3, so hopefully I’ll do better at it then. Anyway, greeting you at their booth were two ladies cosplaying as a couple of characters from the game, so here’s a picture of that.

Cosplay

Speaking of cosplay, at PAX conventions some people dress as their favorite video game characters. This practice is called ‘cosplay’ and it happens at many other video game, comic book, and sci-fi conventions, too. And it’s gotten quite popular over the years. I think it would be fun to do myself, but I’m a little too old to be doing that now. Plus, I usually go to these things as a member of the media, so I want to try to look at least a little somewhat professional at meetings. But it is certainly fun to watch and take pictures of others who are dressed up, so the rest of this blog is going to be dedicated to the cosplays I liked and took pictures of.

One neat idea I saw was a booth called a ‘Cospital’ where cosplayers could go to have their costumes repaired. I guess it’s kind of like some proms where they have stations with seamstresses who can fix wardrobe malfunctions for the young ladies and gents at the prom. I don’t really go to other conventions so I don’t know if it’s also a common practice there, but this is the first time I saw it at PAX and thought it was a cute idea so I took a picture of it.

COSPITAL

GEICO even had a booth at PAX this year! They were giving out really cool free T-shirts with an 8-bit looking gecko on the front. I wanted one of those shirts, but in order to get it, I think you had to enter their booth and get a quote on car insurance. You know, that whole “15 minutes could save you 15 percent or more on car insurance” thing? Which I would’ve done, but I’ve been blind in my left eye since birth and can’t drive, so I don’t own a car! Or anything else they would insure. So I didn’t get a shirt. Oh well. At least I took a picture of someone dressed as the GEICO gecko!

In the hallways I passed this really neat costume of Octodad. It’s a pretty unique game that’s already out on PCs and the Vita. A long time ago I saw a video that said it was coming out on the Wii U, and I hope it does. I really want to play it!

OCTODAD

Some of my younger brothers and their friends really like a cartoon called Steven Universe, so when I saw this lady dressed as one of the characters from that show, I had to take a picture. I believe the character’s name is Pearl, if I’m not mistaken. Please feel free to correct me if I’m wrong.

PEARL

And here’s a big bear dressed in armor. I don’t know what game he’s from or anything, but it’s a bear! Rar!

BEAR

And here’s Commander Video from the Bit.Trip series of games!

COMMANDER

Hey Deadpool! And…Ms. Deadpool?!? Stop aiming those guns at each other’s heads! You two play nice and be friends, you hear me? Seriously, folks, is there really a Ms. Deadpool? I’m kind of curious now.

DEADPOOL

And the winner of Cary’s Cosplay Contest (no prize) goes to these three lovely young ladies dressed as three of Nintendo’s popular starlets Rosalina, Sheik, and Zero Suit Samus.

NINTENDO

Conclusions

And that’s all I did at PAX Prime 2015! It sure was a lot of fun, and one of the better PAX conventions I’ve been to. While it was great to be able to play all those new games, the second best part was meeting with and talking to all those great PR professionals, developers, and gamers. So what was the first best part of PAX? Spending time with my dad! I always bring someone with me to these shows, so I brought him with me this year. I could probably go to them myself, but I think it’s safer and more fun when you bring someone along with you! Anyway, feel free to ask me any questions you may have in the comments section. Thanks for reading and I hope you enjoyed my articles! Later! –Cary

  1. I need to meet me a nice cosplay girl

  2. I always love to see what cosplay is going on. Some of those costumes are seriously great!

  3. Never heard of Steven Universe, but now I’m curious how he came to be ruler of his own universe.

That Dragon Fin Soup game sounds fun.
