PAX South 2016: Costumed Crazies!

PIKMINAt video game and comic book conventions (and even amusement parks nowadays), some people like to dress up as their favorite characters! And PAX South was no exception.  So here are a collection of cosplayers that I took pictures of last weekend.

At last year’s PAX South, game developer Gearbox had a pretty big presence, with a whole room for their booth and lots of events throughout the show. And it’s understandable that they’d be there, as they are a local Texas company.  In fact, they’re so nearby to where I live, I could tell you exactly where their offices are.  But surprisingly, they were not at PAX South this year, and if they were, I certainly didn’t see them.  Gearbox makes the popular Borderlands games, and while I am not interested in that series, I do know who some of the characters are since I played and reviewed TellTale’s Poker Night 2, which has characters from Borderlands in it, playing cards and such.  So here are some people dressed as Borderlands characters.  I can’t recall the name of the robot, but I remember him in Poker Night 2 because he was silly, and GlaDOS (the dealer) called him ‘Juicebox’ once so that’s what I usually call him.  I think the lady’s name is Moxxi and I don’t know what she does in Borderlands, but she’s a bartender in Poker Night 2.

BORDERLANDS

And here is a clever costume idea. I think this lady was supposed to be Bowser Jr. because of the bib and all.  But I liked her poofy dress because it was made to look like the Clown Copter that he rides around in!

BOWSER

While waiting in line for the Galaxy Trail panel, I snapped a picture of some folks dressed as Dr. Light and Dr. Wily from the Mega Man games!

DRLIGHT

Here are some people dressed as three red Pikmin. They looked pretty weird!

PIKMIN

I’ve seen plenty of Little Mac cosplay before, but I thought it was neat how this group of guys went the extra mile and dressed as other characters, too. Like trainer Doc and Mario as the ref.  They even had a speaker that would play music from Punch Out as they jogged around the show.

PUNCHOUT

I saw plenty of squid kid cosplay at PAX South, and even some that were dressed as Callie and Marie. I didn’t get to take a picture of them, though, as we were all in a crowd trying to get somewhere.  I liked how this young lady didn’t take the easy way out and opted to just carry a super soaker.  No, she made a roller, which is my favorite weapon in Splatoon.

SPLATOON

And here’s a homemade fully-body Yoshi costume!

YOSHI

Yay! It’s Phoenix Wright!  One of my favorite Capcom characters and game series!

PHOENIX

And that’s all I took pictures of. There were plenty of other costumes, but some I had no idea who they were, and sometimes it was hard to take pictures in a crowd of people.  There were also a lot of Undertale costumes, too.  But that’s all for now!  Let me know what you think of my PAX South coverage, and if you have any questions, too.  Later!  –Cary
