Galaga Revenge (iOS, Android)
Video game maker Namco has created some of the most well known arcade games around (and they’re my favorite game company, too). From classics like Pac-Man to more modern hits like Tekken, Namco is one of the greats. Another one of their popular arcade classics is Galaga, and now you can enjoy yet another game in the series with Galaga Revenge. It’s free to play on mobile devices, but reviewed on iPad here.
The game could be best described as a cross between classic Galaga and a bullet-hell shooter. Use your finger to guide your fleet of ships around waves of bullets, and you’ll automatically fire at bad guys. Stages are super short and you select them from a map. Sometimes you might even come across a boss. Nab power-ups to give you extra firepower, refill health, or suck in enemies like in Gaplus (Galaga 3).
You’ll gather other items as you play that you can use to upgrade your fleet in a separate menu. Only problem is that while they explain all this in a tutorial, they don’t explain it very well. They’ll tell you to click on things but not why you are doing that or what you are doing does. But I’ve noticed a lot of mobile games are like this. The game tries to add a story with generic anime characters, but I just skipped all that, although some of the characters look kind of cool. At the very least, since it’s free I’d say it’s worth checking out.
Kid Factor:
You shoot spaceships and bugs that explode when defeated and that’s about as violent as it gets. Some of the female characters wear slightly suggestive outfits and reading skill is helpful for the text, but not necessary just to play. Parental supervision is recommended for the in-game ads and purchases.
