Teppen (Mobile)

Do you like Capcom game characters?  You know I do!  Do you like collectable card game battles?  If so, you may want to try Teppen.  It’s a card game for mobile devices (reviewed on iPad here) which features characters from popular Capcom franchises like Street Fighter, DarkStalkers, Mega Man X, Resident Evil, Monster Hunter, and more!

Even though this one plays a little differently, if you have played games like Hearthstone before, you’ll be able to jump right into this one.  You and another player face off, and you must draw a card from your deck to put into one of three places on your side.  These will be your attack cards.  A line will go out from these cards, and when it reaches a card on the opponent’s side, that card will take damage.  If there are no cards on that side, the player will take damage instead.  Whoever runs out of hit points first, loses.

You can see little meters fill up on the cards and when they are full, you can play them by dragging them via the touch screen to where they need to go.  Some cards can attack, some can support attack cards, the player, or the whole battlefield.  You’ll know where to place cards because the area will be highlighted blue.

You can play a single player story mode featuring the main characters, or go online and battle other people.  You can also arrange decks and buy new cards in the shop.  I do have to say I love the artwork on the cards.  The people who made the game must have as well, as you can view the art full screen when looking at your cards.  They’ll probably add new characters periodically as well.  In fact, they just added Jill Valentine (my votes for new characters include Cammy, Phoenix Wright, and Tron Bonne).

My only main problem with the game is that, while it’s easy to figure out how to play, learning what each card does isn’t.  They don’t really give you much instruction as to what to look for on the cards to see what they do, and the text is so small it’s very hard to read, even on my big iPad screen.  I can’t imagine playing this on a tiny cell phone!  So arranging decks isn’t so fun.  Even so, I’d say it’s still worth a look for Capcom fans.

Kid Factor:

Even though you are battling other players, violent animations are minimal.  Defeated players fly back and cry out like they just got hit, but defeated cards just disappear and other animations just show characters firing guns and fireballs at nothing in particular.  Some of the female characters have suggestive outfits (Morrigan I’m talking about you).  Reading skill is a must for the text, and parental supervision is recommended for the in-game purchases and ads.
