This Week in Games: April 5 – 11

dsiWell, it is pretty much impossible to ignore the fact that the big release this week isn’t software, but hardware. This morning the newest member of the Nintendo DS franchise launches – the DSi! Featuring dual camers, larger screens, slimmer styling, and an all-new DSi Store. There are several mini-games released in the DSi Store today, as well as the WarioWare collection. Were it not for the DSi I would call this the ‘week of the PC’! Aside from the multi-platform Godfather II and Chronicles of Riddick, the PC gets an excellent turn-based strategy game Elven Legacy and another expansion to the excellent Company of Heroes franchise. There is plenty to go around this week, so check out the list!

  • The Godfather II
  • The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena
  • Ninja Blade
  • Flock
  • Hannah Montana: The Movie

As for last week … well, not so great. The best thing by far was Guitar Hero: Metallica, and many reviews noted that the franchise and the endless stream of cash-in add-ons is getting tiresome, and many fans are getting worn out on the games. As for the rest, the DS had the most releases, but nothing really worth mentioning.

I finished Fallout 3: The Pitt … and while it was certainly better than the abysmal Operation Anchorage, it was only decent and technically a mess. It was augmented in that regard by Games for Windows Live still being the absolutely worst thing of its’ type to ever appear on the PC. There was stuff a decade ago better than that

What I’m Currently Playing:

  • PC: Elven Legacy – love the implementation of a solid turn-based strategy engine with RPG elements. I’ve been fortunate to have a pre-release copy to fiddle with and it is loads of fun – not up to the excellent standard of last year’s ‘King’s Bounty’, but a solid game.
  • PC: Neverwinter Nights 2: Mysteries of Westgate – still plugging slowly away with this.
  • PSP: Resistance Retribution – not great but solid, I’m replaying it in bits and doing some multiplayer. Nothing else for my PSP to do …
  • DS: Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars – I don’t know how many hours I have spent jacking vans, working deals, and so on … but I think I spent half the week without making any progress on the main game at all.
  • DS: Broken Sword – loved the PC game, loved the Pocket PC game, loved the GBA game, but this is the best of all.

Enjoy gaming!

  1. I’m doing the House of the Dead: Overkill double-pistol Director’s Cut here. Changes the whole game when you’re wielding double shot-guns!

    I’m inching along at Madworld
I’m still noodling with Gears 2
I’m playing Mario Tennis with the family

  2. Mario Tennis by myself and the youth at church, gearing up to give FIre Emblem on the DS a run…

  3. I think it was pretty stupid of Nintendo to do this. Seriously, the DS, the DS lite, and now the DSi? I won’t be surprised if they release another one in a year or 2.
