Super Woden GP (PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, X/S, PC)
Top down viewed racing games have always been a staple in arcades and consoles, with titles like Super Sprint, World Rally, Micro Machines, RC Pro-Am, and many more. And now there’s Super Woden GP for modern consoles and PC, but reviewed on PS4 here.
You begin on a map with many locations, most of them are car companies with racing vehicles you can buy. You start off with just enough money to buy one of the cars, so choose carefully. You can then choose to race in short weekend events on a single track, or do a whole GP season. You can also do free races. There’s also a car wash where you can clean your car for some reason. Winning races earns you money to buy more and better cars so you can participate successfully in the harder races. The action is viewed top down so you drive like how you would an RC car, or games like Micro Machines.
This game has so many problems, though. They just drop you right in with no instructions, and while it’s easy to figure things out, it’s a bit jarring at first. I also couldn’t figure out how to start over in case I wanted to buy a better handling car so I could do better. And the game is super buggy. Like, one time I wanted to change the graphics style to ‘arcade mode’ but it just had a blank screen. And other time the pause menu selections stayed on the middle of the screen even after I un-paused the game! And many times the camera wouldn’t even follow my car! And the play control was just flat out awful. Not recommending this one at all.
Kid Factor:
Super Woden GP is rated E-10 with an ESRB descriptor of Mild Violence. You can bump and crash cars but that’s about it. Reading skill is helpful for some of the text, and younger gamers may find it too difficult.
