Retro Revengers (PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, X/S, PC)
I really don’t keep up with the game streaming business, but apparently it’s very popular. Some streamers even have their own characters and products and stuff. Such is the case with a group of streamers in Japan that I’ve never heard of, but now they have their own game with Retro Revengers. Play as the characters from the streaming videos in a retro styled 2D platformer. But really what sold me on this game was that the music was done by the same composer who did the tunes for Mega Man and Shovel Knight (the music isn’t as good here, but you can tell that’s who did it at least). Anyway, Retro Revengers is available on all current consoles and PC, but reviewed on Switch here.
There are five characters you can play as, and for the first run, you’ll play through each characters’ stage one at a time. Each character has their own special skills. Some have rapid fire projectiles, while others have lobbing bombs. Each character also has different charged attacks and jumping power. One cartoony cat character can even climb on ceilings! Once you go through the five stages with each character, you’ll play through harder versions of those stages, but this time you can switch between characters to bypass obstacles and nab all the secret treasures. Supposedly there are secret characters, too, but I didn’t find any of those. Defeat a boss at the end of each level with a final boss rush and baddie at the end to beat the game. Really the only problem I had with this one is that it’s awfully short. I beat it in an afternoon. And it wasn’t that hard either. But while a lot of the streamers’ in-jokes went over my head, I still had fun with this one while it lasted.
Kid Factor:
Retro Revengers is rated T for Teen with ESRB descriptors of Blood, Violence, and Use of Alcohol. I didn’t really notice any blood or alcohol, but you do hit enemies with pixel knives and fireballs and such. I did see a couple of bad words in the text, too. Reading skill is helpful and younger gamers may find some of the tougher sections too difficult.
