Cash Cow DX (Switch, PC)

Help a cow grab all the gold in this action game that looks like it came from the 80s golden age of arcades.  This game is kind of a mix of Sonic the Hedgehog (there’s even loops on one stage), combined with the platform gameplay of something like Miner 2049er.  Cash Cow DX is available on Switch and PC, but reviewed on Switch here.

The object of the game is to collect all the gold in 2D stages that are about 2 to 3 screens long.  When you do, you can move onto the next level.  Each stage introduces a new obstacle for you, like loops, ziplines, trampolines, and more.  Avoid touching the enemies because if you do, you’ll lose a life and be sent back to the start of the level.  Lose all lives and it’s Game Over.  You can collect a couple of power-ups.  The pickax gives you temporary invincibility and lets you destroy enemies for a short while.  The other will raise the point value of the gold you collect for a limited amount of time.

There are quite a few game modes and even a new character to play as, but you have to unlock them all to do so.  And that’s easier said than done because this game is super hard!  Even on the Easy setting.  Similar to Sonic the Hedgehog, you are encouraged to go super fast, but oftentimes run into an enemy because you didn’t have time to react.  Plus I felt the controls were a little slippery here.  So didn’t like this one as much.

Kid Factor:

Cash Cow DX is rated E for Everyone with an ESRB descriptor of Mild Fantasy Violence.  If you defeat an enemy, they just fly off the screen.  If you get hit, your cow will just say something like, “Oh no!” or “Moo!” and fly back to the start of the stage.  Reading skill is helpful for some of the text, but not necessary just to play.  Younger gamers may find this one too difficult, though.
