Dagger Froggy (PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, X/S, PC)

Help a little frog defeat waves of enemies by throwing daggers in Dagger Froggy, a top down viewed 2D retro action game.  It’s available on all current game consoles and PC but reviewed on PS4 here.

When you start, you can pick from stages that you’ve unlocked, but they’re just single screen background and the enemies in each aren’t that much different.  Move around your frog with the L stick and throw your dagger in 4 directions with the R stick.  But when the dagger goes a certain distance or hits an enemy, it’ll stop and you must pick it up to use it again.  And that’s what really makes this one unique from other Vampire Survivor type games.

When you defeat a round of enemies, you can choose an upgrade for your frog that’ll last for the rest of the stage.  These include speed ups, more throwing daggers, the ability for you to get your dagger back automatically over time, being able to pierce multiple enemies, and much more.  If you can survive for 10 or 15 minutes, depending on what you set the time limit to be in the options screen, you’ll earn coins.  You can use these coins to buy new frogs and permanent upgrades like the ones you get after defeating enemies.

One problem I had with the game is that if you run out of energy before the time runs out, you don’t get to keep any coins.  And you don’t earn very many coins to begin with, so progression feels very slow, especially for such a repetitive game.  It’s not a bad game and is somewhat entertaining, but those problems kept me from staying interested for very long.

Kid Factor:

Dagger Froggy is rated E for Everyone with an ESRB descriptor of Mild Fantasy Violence.  You throw knives and bombs at pixelly enemies that just disappear when defeated.  Reading skill is helpful for the text but not necessary just to play.  Younger gamers may find this one too difficult after a while.
