Press Start 4/21/10: Frantic Action Feeling

A daily? Semi-daily? Bi-daily? Bi-curious-Daily? Little blog update to enhance that whole Twitter thing. Remember, that’s #gamerdadtm or @gamerdadtm or whatever it is. I’m old and don’t understand your social networking. I’m just a cave man. I was walking along and I fell into some ice and your scientists unfroze me… here’s the first Press Start update. Pressing Start now!

* I wore a pair of jeans briefly on Sunday and I left them in my office. They were clean. GamerMom decided to do laundry. My iPhone then went through a complete wash cycle and then about half a tumble dry cycle. It hasn’t worked since, and I’ve tried all the tricks. Does this mean new iPhone? I sure hope so!

* Maggie’s birthday went well. She got a cell phone and has been using it for the most minor things possible. “Dad, I’m coming home now” – from school. etc., the excitement is adorable. Then she comes home and checks her new email. Finding none she listens to the 30 or so songs dad bought for her iPod (All the Single Ladies with their Poker Faces having Bad Romances).

* Maggie also got Sims 3, a game she’s wanted for a long time and I’ve kept from her because it’s so complicated. She’s playing now, as the wonderful Maggie Star! Lady about-town. So far only making friends, I plan on watching for boyfriends just like real life. But she’s only 10, I need not worry… yet.

* Linda and I celebrated being parents for 10 years by going to bed early.

* It’s been a week and no word yet about my book. A week isn’t so long to wait, but I’m going nuts anyway. Hard to wait to find out if your entire life is going to change….

* Henry is playing Sonic: Unleashed and he loves it. As I remember, the game wasn’t popular but he’s 7 and this is the first game he picked out with his own money.

* I’ve been playing Serious Sam HD and Toy Soldiers – the former is a game I helped champion back in the day. It’s from a tiny Croatian developer and at the time that was remarkable because it was just a year or so after the Balkan’s war. A Doom throwback was welcome for, in the developer’s words: “That frantic action feeling.”  Toy Soliders is a tower defense game where you can man many of the weapons and even the biplanes. It has a WWI theme and is in full 3D, the game levels even take place inside of an open tin box, like the ones your great-grampa may have played in. Just a lovely backdrop, even if I’m finding the game a little low on replay level. I think I’d prefer an RTS, something where victory is more flexible.

That’s all for now.
