LEGO Dimensions E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial Fun Pack

LEGOET1When I was young, E.T. was a super popular movie.  Every kid in my first-grade class HAD to wear E.T. sweatshirts to school, and “Turn on your Heartlight” blared on the radio nonstop.  But you know what’s strange is that I really didn’t like the movie that much.  I preferred flicks like Gremlins and Ghostbusters, so I don’t know if that makes me a messed up kid or not.  I just felt the E.T. movie was too long and slow-paced, and E.T. himself was so ugly.  He looked like a Rotisserie chicken.  And the movie played up Reese’s Pieces way too much.  Once I FINALLY got to try them, I was severely disappointed.  But even I can’t deny that E.T. is an iconic and influential movie and the E.T. ride at Universal Studios is pretty fun.  So it’s no surprise that E.T. would show up in LEGO Dimensions.  The game is available for nearly all current game consoles, but reviewed on Wii U here. I have to say that the makers of the game were pretty brave to put E.T. in here, as the last time E.T. was in a game was on the Atari 2600, and that particular title helped start the video game crash in the early 80’s!  But I don’t think that’ll happen here!

LEGO Dimensions Mission Impossible Level Pack

LEGOMI1The first Mission Impossible movie came out way back in 1996.  I remember watching it, and it was a decent action flick, but it didn’t compel me to watch any of the sequels.  Plus, even though the TV show it was based on was a little before my time, I seem to remember it focusing more on teamwork between the agents, while the movie was just “Tom Cruise Does Everything.”  But the movie was certainly popular enough to spawn sequels.  And now, your mission, if you choose to build it, is to check out the Mission Impossible Level Pack for LEGO Dimensions.  The game is available for nearly all current game consoles, but reviewed on Wii U here.

LEGO Dimensions The A-Team Fun Pack

LEGOATEAM1When I was a little kid, The A-Team was a very popular TV show.  But I wasn’t really into it as I was more interested in shows like The Dukes of Hazzard and Knight Rider.  One show had a cool orange car that jumped over ramps, and the other had a TALKING car!  The A-Team just had a van with a red stripe.  (yeah you know where my priorities were as a little boy) Plus, I feel ashamed to admit it, but as a little kid, I was kind of scared of Mr. T, who was the star of the show.  But there’s no denying that The A-Team was super popular.  Heck, even Mr. Bean slept on A-Team sheets in one of his comedy skits, and a few years ago they made a movie remake of The A-Team (I rented it once and feel asleep about an hour in, unfortunately).  Mr. T was also popular in his own right, even getting his own Saturday morning cartoon and breakfast cereal back then (yes, really).  And now you can relive the action of the TV show in LEGO form with The A-Team Fun Pack for LEGO Dimensions.  The game is available for nearly all current home game consoles, but reviewed on Wii U here.

LEGO Dimensions Ghostbusters Story Pack

LEGOGHOST1This past summer, we were treated with a brand new Ghostbusters movie featuring a different story and an all-female team.  While I don’t think it was nowhere near as good as the first movie, I still laughed a lot and it was considered a comedy, so I guess it did its job.  Plus, the new movie helped bring back my favorite childhood drink: Ecto-Cooler, so it’s all good.  And now you can play the movie in LEGO form with the LEGO Dimensions Ghostbusters Story Pack.  Not to be confused with the LEGO Dimensions Ghostbusters Level Pack, which I reviewed earlier this year.  LEGO Dimensions and all the sets that go with it are playable on nearly all the current home game consoles, but reviewed on Wii U here.

George of the Jungle: Owie Owie (iOS, Android)

GEORGE_BOXI’m a big fan of Jay Ward Studios, and I even used to know someone who worked there.  So what is Jay Ward Studios?  Well they made a pretty well-known cartoon called Rocky and Bullwinkle.  They also did a lot of animated advertising, and created a pretty popular cereal character.  You may not remember Quisp and Quake, but you might recall a certain seafaring gentleman known as Cap’n Crunch.  Another cartoon they did back in the day was George of the Jungle.  Despite having two dopey live action movies and a lousy animated remake, George still has one of the catchiest theme songs on TV.  So when I read about a George of the Jungle free-to-play downloadable game on iOS and Android (reviewed on iPad here), I was mildly curious.

Kubo: A Samurai Quest (iOS, Google Play)

KUBO_BOXI’m a big fan of stop motion and clay animation.  In fact, I even took a class on it once and now I have lots more respect for the folks who do that kind of stuff for movies and whatnot.  Which is why I keep my eye out on what Laika does.  Laika is a studio which has made stop motion movies such as Caroline, ParaNorman, and Boxtrolls.  Their newest feature, Kubo and the Two Strings, takes elements form Japanese folklore and while the plot is a bit predictable, it’s still fun and visually stunning.  Sadly, the mobile game tie-in, Kubo: A Samurai Quest, is yet another match-three puzzler, but I had to take a look at it anyway out of curiosity.  It’s available free-to-play on iOS and Google Play, but reviewed on iPad here.

Cary’s Spring and Summer 2016 Movie Roundup!

ECTO3Well, summer’s almost over, so you know what that means.  It’s time for me to talk about the movies I saw this summer (and some in the spring, too), as well as movies I wanted to see but didn’t get a chance to.  I’ll try to keep things spoiler-free, but there may be a few that slip out, so just be warned.  So let’s do this thing!

Disney Art Academy (3DS)

DISNEY_BOXFor nearly a century, Disney has been synonymous with artistic animation and cartoons, and now they’ve teamed up with Nintendo for a new Art Academy game.  Nintendo has been teaching art lessons with their Art Academy franchise on multiple consoles, spanning the DS, 3DS, and even the Wii U.  So it only seems natural for them to feature art lessons with Disney characters on the 3DS.  I’ve wished that this series would get more recognition, and maybe now with the familiar Disney license, it might just do that.

Hi-C Ecto-Cooler Returns! (My Childhood in a Can)

ECTO3A new Ghostbusters movie was recently released, with a lot of mixed reactions from fans.  When I first heard about it, I said, “Hey, I’m OK with it if they bring back Ecto Cooler,” not thinking that they would.  Well guess, what?  They DID bring back Ecto-Cooler so I guess I’m OK with the movie now!  The new Ecto Cooler is sold in cans (although I’ve seen pictures of it on the Internet in juice box form as well).  Only problem with it is that it’s REALLY hard to find.  Luckily I found a movie theater that served it in cans, so I snagged a few and here’s my impressions of it.
