GamerDad and family Welcome to GamerDad: Gaming with Children. My name is Andrew S. Bub - the GamerDad - and I've been writing about videogames, movies, and children for over 15 years now. After working as a magazine journalist, I switched gears to write about how media violence affects children, educating parents about them, and working closely with magazines, newspapers, major retailers and even politicians. GamerDad is an internationally recognized expert in this field. Games, movies and media are fun, kids and families love them, they aren't going away. So join me in cutting through the hype and lets have a real conversation about the things that matter: Video Games, Violent Media, and their supposed effect on children and families.

Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid: Burst Forth!! Choro-gon Breath (PS4, Switch)

Wow, now that’s a mouthful of a title!  But what does all that mean?  Well, “Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid” is a popular Japanese comic book manga series and anime cartoon.  It’s about an ordinary office lady who one day stumbles on a dragon from another world.  This dragon magically transforms into a maid lady and offers to clean her house in return for room and board.  But when you’ve got a dragon in your house, nothing is ever ordinary and Miss Kobayashi and her dragon girl friends have lots of adventures and escapades together.  And now they’re in their own video game!  Here they are trapped inside a computer and the only way to get out is to play a 2-D vertically scrolling bullet hell shooter!  It’s available on PS4 and Switch, but reviewed on PS4 here.

Rick Henderson (PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, X/S, PC)

I love how the title of this game is just some average guy’s name.  When I did an image search to get pictures for this review, at first all I got was a bunch of dudes’ faces!  That cracked me up.  I can’t wait until they come out with a game called “Cary Woodham.”  What kind of game would you think that would be?  Well this game is a standard 2-D side scrolling shooter and it’s available on all current consoles and PC, but reviewed on PS4 here.

Minecraft amiibo

Minecraft has got to be one of the most popular video games of all time.  But believe it or not, I’ve never played it!  Oh sure, I’ve watched my brothers play it, and I’ve reviewed Minecraft Story Mode and even ate the cereal!  But I’ve stayed away from the main game.  Mainly because it looks too addictive!  I’m bad enough as it is with Animal Crossing!  But Minecraft is so popular that the characters are in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, so of course they made amiibo figures out of them.  And I just got them so let’s take a look!

Dyna Bomb 2 (Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, X/S)

Play as two heroic jetpack riding kids as you chuck bombs at enemy robots and collect diamonds to buy upgrades in Dyna Bomb 2.  It’s a colorful 2-D platformer available for all current consoles, but reviewed on Switch here.  I never played the first Dyna Bomb game, so I don’t know what’s changed or improved in the sequel.

Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader? (Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, X/S, PC)

Are you Smarter Than a Fifth Grader? is a TV quiz game show where adults try and answer questions that an elementary school kid might learn.  But since it’s been a long time since we were in grade school, and may not remember all those facts, that may be harder than it seems!  Luckily contestants on this show can get limited help from a panel of real life elementary school kids!  And now you can play a video game based on this show for current game consoles (reviewed on Switch here). But wow, is this TV show even still on?  I reviewed a 3DS version of this game show WAY back in 2015!

Tinykin (PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, X/S, PC)

One of the reasons why the Nintendo GameCube was one of my top favorite consoles was all the 3-D adventures I could sink my teeth into.  I really miss those days.  Fast forward to today where I mostly review indie titles that are average at best.  Sure every once in a while I might play one that’s mildly amusing, but it’s getting rarer and rarer.  Which is why Tinykin is such a surprise!  It reminds me of a cross between two quirky GameCube 3-D adventures: Pikmin and Chibi-Robo.  And I enjoyed it so much that I didn’t want to stop playing it!  Tinykin is available on all current consoles and PC, but reviewed on PS4 here.

Robo Revenge Squad (Switch, PS4, Xbox One, PC)

Build and customize robots out of everyday parts like boxing gloves and disco balls, and then pit them against each other in top down action stages in Robot Revenge Squad.  It’s available on most current consoles and PC, but reviewed on Switch here.

Let’s Have a Play Date With the PlayDate!

Way back in 2019 when I went to PAX West in Seattle, I saw a new handheld console called the PlayDate.  It was simple, yellow, and had a black and white screen.  And a crank you turned on the side!  And it was just as charming as heck and I wanted one for some reason!  Well I finally got one, so let’s take a look at it!

Kid Ball Adventure (PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, X/S, PC)

You are a little bouncing ball with a backwards cap enjoying a day with your pink ball girlfriend.  But suddenly a mean green ball riding a dragon takes her to his castle, so you must bounce your away around 2-D obstacles to save her.  At first glance this may look like one of those super challenging and frustrating Super Meat Boy style games, but it’s actually not that bad.  Kid Ball Adventure is available on all current consoles and PC, but reviewed on PS4 here.
